A number of people have asked me why I chose the name Sparrow Solutions for this consulting venture. One of the main reasons (the other being more personal) is that I have always been fascinated by how ubiquitous sparrows are and yet how often we never even notice them, even while we enjoy their song.
Not unlike these fascinating little birds, spreadsheets have become a ubiquitous part of the business environment that we take for granted. Most people never learn how to use them or to go beyond the simplest of functions, yet spreadsheets are capable of amazing things that with a bit of effort can do much to simplify and speed up basic tasks we are continually doing.
Since a main focus of my efforts is to find simple, practical solutions to some of the challenges businesses are facing, what better symbol than the common, often ignored sparrow?
So the next time you see a sparrow, spare a thought to appreciate the joy the amazing song of this common little bird brings you. (But here in eastern Canada you will have to wait until spring; did you notice that they weren’t around in the winter?)
And the next time you are frustrated by a business process that is taking more time and effort than you would like, give a thought to how you might simplify it, possibly by using the spreadsheet program you already have on your computer.
